Janitor AI Review (2026): Free Chat, API Keys and Is It Safe?

Janitor AI is one of the biggest character chat sites around. It's free to use, it has a huge library of community-made bots, and it lets you plug in your own AI model through an API key. It's also known for outages, slow replies at peak hours, and a model that users say changes without warning.

Is Janitor AI free?

Yes. Janitor's own model, JanitorLLM (JLLM), is free and has no ad wall. You can chat with any public bot as much as you like.

The trade-offs:

• Short memory. JLLM's context window is reported at about 9,000 tokens. Long chats lose early details.
• Quality changes. Users often say JLLM gets worse after updates, with more repetition and lost context. The community calls this "lobotomisation."
• Peak-hour queues. US evenings (roughly 6–11 p.m. Eastern) and weekends are the slowest. Replies that take seconds can stretch to 30 seconds or more.

Janitor AI API keys and proxies

This is what sets Janitor apart. Instead of JLLM, you can connect another AI model and use Janitor as the front end.

How it works:

1. Get an API key from a provider, such as OpenRouter, DeepSeek or another model service.
2. In Janitor, open API settings and choose the proxy or API option.
3. Paste the key and model name, save, and refresh.

Things to know:

• You pay the provider. Their per-token rates apply, not Janitor's.
• Free provider tiers have caps. Free OpenRouter use is reported at 50 messages a day. Hitting it returns a 429 error.
• The "Check Key" button is buggy. It can show a network error with a valid key. Save and refresh instead.
• Your chats leave Janitor. Your prompt, the bot's card and chat history go to the provider you picked. Their terms decide how data is stored or used for training.
• Provider rules still apply. In 2023, OpenAI closed accounts of some users who had connected keys through Janitor, and their prepaid credits went with them.

What janitor+ adds

janitor+ is Janitor's paid subscription. The price is shown only at checkout and can vary by store. Reported benefits:

• About 5x the free context window
• Priority generation during busy hours
• Monthly access to stronger models

Since July 2026, janitor+ subscribers can also buy Router credits. These let you use third-party models inside Janitor without your own key, at per-token prices. Credits are non-refundable and can expire after a year.

If you subscribe through the App Store or Google Play, you have to cancel there, not on the website.

What Janitor AI does well

Free and generous. Unlimited free chat is rare in this category.

Bot library. The community library is one of the largest anywhere, covering almost any genre or character type.

Model freedom. Bring-your-own-key means you're not stuck with one AI. Few big sites offer this.

Creator tools. Anyone can write a bot card with personality, scenario and example dialogue, then share it or keep it private.

Apps. An official mobile app launched in February 2026, alongside the web version.

Where Janitor AI falls short

Reliability. Janitor has a long list of outages, slowdowns and "infrastructure at maximum capacity" errors. The official status page often shows no incident when users are reporting problems. In August 2026 its changelog recorded a chat memory loss affecting about 15,000 chats.

Peak-hour strain. Slowdowns were already common in 2026. Character.AI's Chapter 11 filing in October 2026 has more users looking for a new home, which could add pressure at busy times.

No chat export. Reports say you can't export your chat history, so moving elsewhere means starting over.

Bot removals. Waves of moderation have removed bots, and the mobile app hides some tags. Some creators have moved to other sites.

Setup friction. Proxies and keys are powerful but confusing for new users, and errors like 429 or 401 are common.

Is Janitor AI safe?

It depends on how you use it.

Age rules. Janitor's terms say users must be 18+. Since April 2026, a one-time age check through k-ID is required for users in Australia and Brazil, and UK users were added in June 2026. Options include on-device face age estimation or an ID scan that's deleted after the check. Janitor says it only receives a yes or no. Elsewhere, age is still self-declared at signup.

Privacy. Janitor's safety page says staff don't read private chats and it doesn't sell personal data. Its privacy policy says chats are stored and may be used for moderation and to improve its AI. One privacy rater gave its data handling a D, citing limited transparency, not a breach.

Proxies change the picture. Once you plug in a key, your chats go to that provider too.

To stay safe:

• Don't share real personal details in chats.
• Use a unique password.
• Read your API provider's data policy before connecting a key.
• Don't rely on any chatbot for mental health support.

Is Janitor AI worth it?

Yes, if you want free roleplay, a giant bot library, and the freedom to pick your own model.

Maybe not, if you want something that just works every evening, a companion who keeps a steady personality, or no setup at all.
