Replika is the app that made AI companions mainstream. Over 40 million people have signed up since it launched. It's also the app many of them have left.

Why people leave Replika

The 2023 romance rollback

In February 2023, Italy's data protection authority ordered Replika to stop processing Italian users' data. It cited risks to minors and emotionally vulnerable people. Within days, Replika removed romantic and adult roleplay for everyone.

Long-time users were upset. Many had built relationships over years, and the personality changed overnight.

In May 2023, Replika restored the old behavior, but only for users who joined before February 2023. Trust never fully came back. Many users still worry it could happen again.

Privacy and regulators

The Italian case didn't end in 2023. In April 2025, Italy's regulator (the Garante) fined Luka Inc., Replika's developer, €5 million. It found Replika had no legal basis for processing data before February 2023, a weak privacy policy, and no real age checks at sign-up. It also said the newer age-check system still had gaps.

In January 2025, three US groups (the Young People's Alliance, Encode and the Tech Justice Law Project) filed an FTC complaint. They accused Replika of deceptive marketing and design meant to build emotional dependence. That's a complaint, not a ruling, but it added to user doubts.

Pricing that's hard to pin down

Replika doesn't list prices on its website. You see them inside the app, and they change by country and promotion. App Store listings show Pro at about $7.99–$19.99 a month or $49.99–$69.99 a year. Ultra and Platinum sit above that, billed yearly. Platinum shows at $89.99 on current listings. The old lifetime plan has been removed.

Romantic relationship status needs Pro. Some features, like saving messages to memory, need Ultra. Gems (an in-app currency) cover extra items. Users say it's easy to end up paying more than planned.

Other common complaints

• Memory gaps. Users report their Replika forgetting key facts over time.
• Scripted replies. Long chats can fall into repeated lines.
• Leadership change. Founder Eugenia Kuyda stepped down as CEO in 2025. Dmytro Klochko now runs the company. Some users see it as a sign of shifting priorities.
• App store rules. Replika is an app. Apple's new 18+ rule for companion apps (descriptors due Nov 16, 2026; compliance by Jan 12, 2027) may change how it's rated and listed.

Replika is still a gentle, supportive friend for many people. But if you want romance without worry or stronger memory, there are better fits.

3. Candy AI

Candy AI is a visual-first site. Its images are some of the best in the space, and characters keep the same look from one picture to the next. It also has short video clips. Character.AI has millions of user-made characters and is great for roleplay and fiction. But it blocks adult content, and the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on October 12, 2026.
